Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

Like hair and skin, teeth vary in color. Some are yellower or darker than others, even when they are quite healthy.

Most common reasons for teeth to get yellow or stained are:

Food and Drink

Coffee, tea and red wine are some major staining culprits. What do they have in common? Intense color pigments called chromogens that attach to the white, outer part of your tooth (enamel).

Tobacco Use

Two chemicals found in tobacco create stubborn stains: Tar and nicotine. Tar is naturally dark. Nicotine is colorless until it’s mixed with oxygen. Then, it turns into a yellowish, surface-staining substance.

Below the hard, white outer shell of your teeth (enamel) is a softer area called dentin. Over time, the outer enamel layer gets thinner and more of the yellowish dentin shows through.

If you’ve been hit in the mouth, your tooth may change color because it reacts to an injury by laying down more dentin, which is a darker layer under the enamel.

Tooth darkening can be a side effect of certain antihistamines, antipsychotics and high blood pressure medications. Young children who are exposed to antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline when their teeth are forming (either in the womb or as a baby) may have discoloration of their adult teeth later in life. Chemotherapy and head and neck radiation can also darken teeth.

Fast and efficient!

Whitening can be done in the dental office or at home.

For in-office whitening, your dentist probably will photograph your teeth first. This step will help him or her to monitor the progress of the treatment. Dr. Aqib will discuss with you the level of whitening you want and give you an idea of how many treatment cycles you may need to achieve the shade you want. . Before beginning the treatment, we need to make sure that the mouth is free of plaque /tartar, that existing dental works are integral and free of breaks, fractures and/or infiltrations.

For whitening at home, your dentist can make trays to hold the whitening gel that fit your teeth precisely. Home whitening gel usually needs to be applied daily for two to three weeks. Over-the-counter kits also are widely available for home use. They provide trays to hold the gel, or whitening strips that stick to your teeth. Talk to your dentist if you want to use these home products. Be sure to follow directions to avoid overuse and possible damage to your teeth and mouth.

The best results are achieved on yellow, brown teeth. The whitening gel works only on tooth enamel and not on dental restorations of any kind, including resin fillings and crowns. These will have to be substituted to obtain a homogenous new color
